Walnut Improvement Program

Program Overview

Walnut treeThe UC Walnut Improvement Program was initiated by the Pomology Department at UC Davis in 1947 by Gene Serr and Harold Forde, to develop walnut cultivars in support of the walnut industry in California. The program is currently led by Charles Leslie, Plant Breeder in the UC Department of Plant Sciences.

Breeding goals involve characteristics that affect yield, such as precocious bearing; nut traits such quality color, nut size and fill, shell and seal strength; early harvest dates; disease and insect resistance.
